Titus’ Career Night leads Bears to SoCon Victory
1/24/2019 8:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Women's Basketball team claimed the top slot in the Southern Conference standings following the 65-58 victory over Chattanooga on Thursday night, improving to 4-0 in league play. The Bears are now 12-7 on the season and have won four consecutive games for the second time this season.
Â
Shannon Titus led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor. Titus also tied a career high in rebounds with nine. Amanda Thompson secured her 10th double-double of the season with 11 points and 16 rebounds. KeKe Calloway chipped in for 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The Bears pulled down a season high 50 rebounds in the victory over the Mocs, outrebounding Chattanooga 50-31. Thompson and Titus combined for 25 of Mercer's 50 rebounds.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Shannon Titus provided the spark that Mercer needed to come away with the victory, logging 34 minutes of action and coming away with a new career high in points with 24. The sophomore guard also pulled down nine rebounds and was perfect from the line, knocking down all six free throw attempts.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer won the opening quarter 19-15 in a back-and-forth affair with the Mocs. Neither team led by more than one possession until the 1:26 mark when Shannon Titus knocked in a pair of free throws to extend Mercer's lead to 12-7. Titus scored five of the last seven points for the Bears in the opening quarter, including an and-one conversion with just two seconds left in the frame. Amanda Thompson proved to be in form, netting six points and pulling down five boards in the first 10 minutes.
Â
The Bears remained in the driver's seat for the second quarter, jumping out to a nine-point lead following a fast-break layup by Ally Welch. Titus scored six of the first 10 points for Mercer to kick off the second quarter. Chattanooga trimmed the Bears' advantage to just three following back-to-back threes. However, Mercer closed out the half on a 7-3 run with KeKe Calloway burying five of the seven points for the 36-29 lead at the break.
Â
The Bears stretched their lead to a game-high 12 points with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter after Titus connected on another and-one opportunity to set a new career high with 18 points. Chattanooga did not fold, outscoring Mercer 10-2 over the next three minutes to trim the Mercer lead to just four. The Bears did not let the Mocs any closer for the remainder of the quarter, scoring five of the last seven points to take the 52-45 advantage into the final quarter of play.
Â
The Mocs scored the first five points of the final quarter to cut the Bears' lead to just two points, silencing the Mercer faithful. However, Mercer retaliated with an 8-0 run to stretch its lead back to double digits, forcing a Chattanooga timeout and igniting the crowd. Linnea Rosendal connected on a pair of critical jumpers to spark the run and Titus capped it off with a fast-break layup. The Mocs closed the gap following a 6-0 run as the Bears were scoreless over the next 4:07 to play. LaKaitlin Wright's layup with 1:54 remaining broke the scoring drought and put the Bears ahead by six, 62-56. The Bears scored three of the final five points of the game to seal the victory and give the Mocs their first conference loss of the season.

COACH'S CORNER
On the importance of the win:
"Well it was a big win for us. Chattanooga has been the team that we have been battling with over the last few years. They are very talented and they know how to win. We played really well in the first half and it was a tight game in the second half. It was very important for us to start strong the way we did."
Â
On the play of Shannon Titus:
"Shannon is continuing to improve and she needs to have the same confidence that we have in her night in and night out. She was feeling it tonight and she was attacking the rim and knocking down her free throws. She and KeKe both played exceptional defense tonight and got things done on both ends of the floor."
Â
On KeKe's ability to be the facilitator tonight:
"KeKe struggled early on with her shot and I was really proud of her because tonight she played within herself and let the game come to her. She did a great job of running our team and once again she played well on the defensive end."
