Pair of Double-Doubles Elevates Bears over Bucs
1/26/2019 5:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Women's Basketball team used a 46-21 advantage in the second half to pull away from the ETSU Bucs, 64-41. With the win, Mercer improved to 13-7 and 5-0 in Southern Conference action. The Bucs fall to 4-17 on the season and 2-3 in SoCon play.
Â
Shannon Titus backed up Thursday's career-high performance with her first collegiate double-double on Saturday after scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. This is the second consecutive game that Titus led the floor in scoring. Amanda Thompson joined Titus in the double-double column with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. The duo are the first pair to record a double-double in the same game since Sydni Means (19 points, 14 assists) and Alex Williams (19 points, 11 rebounds) on Jan. 19, 2017 in a 76-52 win over Furman.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer held ETSU to its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season, allowing the Bucs to only knock down .280 percent of their shots (14-of-50). The Bears also held ETSU to its lowest-scoring point total of the season with 41.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
For the second consecutive game, Shannon Titus earned the honor of Player of the Game. The Johns Creek, Ga. native finished the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. All of this on the heels of a career-high 24 points against Chattanooga on Thursday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer jumped out to an early 7-2 lead thanks to five unanswered points from KeKe Calloway and Titus. However, ETSU responded with a 7-2 run of its own to even the game at nine apiece with 1:25 left to play in the quarter. A three pointer by Linnea Rosendal and a jumper by Thompson pushed the Mercer lead back to 14-9 heading into the second quarter.
Â
The Mercer offense stalled in the second quarter, scoring just four points and shooting 2-for-12 from the floor. The Bucs outscored the Bears 11-4 in the quarter for the 20-18 lead at halftime.
Â
The Bears reclaimed the lead after scoring eight of the first 10 points to start the second half, including six points from Titus. After ETSU pulled to within two points, 28-26, Mercer used a 7-0 run to stretch its lead to nine points. The Bears outscored the Bucs 21-11 in the third quarter for the 39-31 lead, capping off the 10-minute period with a corner three from Rosendal before time expired.
Â
Mercer put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, scoring the first five points to force an ETSU timeout. The halt in action did not slow down the Bears as Mercer poured in the next six points to cap off an 11-0 run to start the final quarter, leading 50-31 with 5:47 to play. After the Bucs scored four of the next six points, the Bears put the game away for good with a 9-0 run that electrified the arena. Titus ended the spurt on a high note for the fans, converting an and-one jumper from the free throw line for the 61-35 lead. Mercer was able to unload the bench and allow some of the younger players to gain SoCon experience in the closing minutes of play.

COACH'S CORNER
The encouragement of Shannon's efforts:
"Shannon is so gifted and talented. Half of her battle has been confidence and now all of a sudden she is getting and-ones and she is getting to the rim. She is an amazing athlete and we are trying to show her how good she truly can be. She continues to work hard and her teammates are so excited for her because she is a quality human being and they want her to succeed."
Â
On the points-off-turnovers battle:
"We have players that can run the floor and Shannon is the main one. She is probably the fastest player we have up and down the court. When she runs, sometimes that opens up Linnea because the defense has to worry about the first person. Sometimes our best offense is our transition offense."
Â
On being able to utilize the entire bench:
"We have not been able to empty the bench this year. I feel bad because those players come to practice every day and work just as hard and you want them to have time on the court. It was a big positive at the end of the day to get all of the players some experience in conference play."
