1/31/2019 9:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer Women's Basketball picked up a hard-fought victory at Wofford on Thursday night, leaving Spartanburg with an 81-79 victory and an undefeated Southern Conference record still intact. Shannon Titus connected on a game-winning layup with four seconds remaining to aid the Bears in improving to 14-7 and 6-0 in SoCon play.
Â
Titus finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds and two assists, including the layup that was felt all the way in Macon. Amanda Thompson solidified her candidacy for January SoCon Player of the Month after a 21-point, 16-rebound performance. KeKe Calloway concluded the game with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, knocking down four threes on the evening.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The Bears concluded the game shooting .508 from the floor, their second-highest field goal percentage of the season. Mercer finished 32-of-63, including 6-of-14 from beyond the arc. The 81 points was also the highest point total for Mercer in a SoCon game this season.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Amanda Thompson secured her 12th double-double of the season and her third consecutive after finishing with 21 points and 16 rebounds. The senior captain was efficient from the floor, finishing 8-of-11 and a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Thompson also added four assists in the victory for the Bears.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Calloway got the game started off with a three on Mercer's first possession for the early lead. The Terriers scored 10 of the next 14 points to take the 10-7 advantage with 6:12 remaining in the half. Wofford then stretched its lead to 17-12 with just under two minutes left in the quarter, its largest lead of the quarter. The Bears slowly chipped away at the Wofford advantage, outscoring the Terriers 9-5 to close the quarter. Tia Benvenuti hit a jumper at the buzzer, assisted by Calloway, to pull within one of Wofford, 22-21. Calloway scored eight of her 20 points in the first quarter, draining a pair of threes in the 10-minute period.
Â
The second quarter belonged to the Bears, outscoring Wofford 27-19 for the eight-point advantage at the half. The two squads went back and forth to start the second quarter with Mercer tying the game up at 26 and then 28 on the next possession. The Bears then outscored Wofford 12-2 over a three-minute span, capped off by Thompson's and-one conversion with 4:43 left in the half. Mercer held the Terriers at arm's length for the remainder of the quarter, clinging to the double-digit lead until the final seconds as Wofford closed the gap to 48-41 at the half. Thompson finished the second quarter with 13 points and eight rebounds, securing her double-double at the break with 15 points and 10 boards to lead all players.
Â
It didn't take long for Wofford to battle back, outscoring Mercer 8-2 to start the period, cutting the Bears' advantage to just one. Mercer held on to the lead until Cairo Booker hit a layup for the Terriers, giving the home squad the 58-57 lead with 1:59 left in the third quarter. The two squads would not separate from one another, concluding the quarter tied at 64 apiece.
Â
Defense played a big role in the final quarter as there was only a combined 32 points in the quarter. Trailing 70-68 with 5:53 left, the Bears scored five unanswered points from Thompson and Calloway to take the 73-70 lead. Mercer grew its lead to 79-75 with 47 seconds remaining as Thompson connected on a layup. The Terriers evened the game at 79 apiece following Chloe Wanink's game-tying three with nine seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Mercer drew up the perfect play for Shannon Titus to take the ball to the rack for an uncontested layup. Titus had no problem netting the go-ahead layup, putting Mercer on top 81-79 with four seconds to play. The Terriers had one final look at the tying layup but the ball fell harmlessly out of the cylinder and into the hands of Thompson for the Mercer victory.

NOTABLES
COACH'S CORNER
Ability to shoot the ball tonight:
"We needed to shoot the ball well tonight because we had 18 turnovers and Wofford shot 49 percent as well. Both teams shot the ball well and I wouldn't say it was our best game defensively. We turned the ball over way too much but we did have four players in double figures and Amanda had another double-double."
Â
On the play from Thompson and Titus:
"Amanda having eight offensive rebounds gave us more scoring opportunities. Amanda played another near-flawless game finishing 8-for-11 from the floor and eight offensive rebounds and eight defensive. She played at another level tonight. Shannon played well tonight too. She was tasked with guarding Chloe Wanink, the leading scorer in the conference and did a really good job against her."
Â
On the final play:
"Without going into much detail, we knew how Wofford had been defending us all night so we drew up a counter. We put the ball in Shannon's hands and she went strong to the glass and had a hard layup to put us ahead by two. We were fortunate to have eight seconds on the clock to draw up a play we were comfortable with."
