Mercer Ends Samford’s SoCon Unbeaten Streak

The Bears defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 on Sunday evening
MACON, Ga. – Freshman Amaya Evans scored in the 88th minute of the contest to lift the Mercer women's soccer team past Samford, 1-0, on Sunday evening at Betts Stadium. The win for the Bears ends a 30 game SoCon unbeaten streak for Samford.

Samford (7-3-5, 4-1-1 SoCon) outshot Mercer (12-2-0, 3-1-0 SoCon) in the contest 14-9. This was the third straight contest that Evans has scored a goal and her second straight game-winning goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears had the better opportunities to score in the first half as they outshot Samford 5-1. The best scoring chance came on a free kick that Abigail Zoeller sent into the box that Nicole Icen headed wide of goal. The match went scoreless into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Samford came on the attack as they outshot the Bears 13-4. Jordan Ebert recorded five saves keeping the shutout in tack. After a brief weather delay, the Bulldogs had multiple scoring chances but Ebert recorded the saves.

Late in the second half, Icen found Evans streaking down the right side of the field. She passed ahead and Evans dribbled the ball into the box. She took the shot and scored putting the Bears ahead, 1-0, with 2:26 left in the game. The Bulldogs had one more shot on goal that Ebert saved and the Bears came away with a 1-0 victory over Samford.
