
Women’s Hoops Opens Road Swing at Kennesaw State

Mercer will begin its three-game road trip with a Peach State matchup at Kennesaw State on Wednesday.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Women's Basketball team will travel away from Hawkins Arena for the first time this season as it departs for a three-game road trip, beginning on Wednesday with a clash at Kennesaw State.

Both the Bears and Owls enter the contest with a 1-1 record. In their last game, Mercer dropped a 75-62 decision to Western Kentucky on Friday.

There's a First Time for Everything
Sophomore forward Jaron Dougherty recorded the first double-double of her career on Friday evening with 26 points and 13 rebounds against Western Kentucky. It was Mercer's first double-double of the young season as Dougherty set personal bests in points, rebounds, defensive rebounds (10), field goals made (12), field goals attempted (21), 3-pointers made (1), 3-pointers attempted (2) and minutes (37).

Hit the Road, Jack!
The Bears begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday at Kennesaw State following a 1-1 homestand to open the year. Mercer then travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on Alabama on Sunday before closing out the trip at in-state rival Georgia on Nov. 21.

The Bears' roster is comprised with a plethora of young talent with 11 of the 12 players being underclassmen. That unit makes Mercer one of the youngest rosters in the country, tying Winthrop for the most freshmen and sophomores. A total of 11 teams have nine or more freshmen and sophomores on their teams, including Detroit Mercy (10), Iona (10), Indiana (9), Indiana State (9), Middle Tennessee State (9), Seton Hall (9), Wright State (9) and Youngstown State (9).

Mercer closed out its two-game home stand to open the season with a 75-62 setback against Western Kentucky on Friday at Hawkins Arena.Â

Sophomore Jaron Dougherty notched her first-career double-double in the game with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The forward was flirting with a double-double at the break with 11 points and nine rebounds by halftime. She turned up the heat in the third quarter by going 6-for-7 from the floor for 13 points and four rebounds. Rookie Jordan McLaughlin joined Dougherty in double-figures with 10 points for the second consecutive game.

Mercer clawed its way back from an early 14-4 deficit to take a 42-41 lead with 3:33 left in the third quarter. The two sides battled back-and-forth for the next 10 minutes until the Lady Toppers managed to pull away in the final four minutes of the game.

Mercer has dominated the series against in-state foe Kennesaw State as of late, winning eight-of-the-last-nine meetings dating back to Jan. 5, 2013. A pair of four-game winning streaks was interupted by a 76-56 win by Kennesaw State in 2014.

The Bears have won each of the last three meetings in Kennesaw -- 74-53 (March 1, 2014), 54-44 (Jan. 6, 2015) and 72-61 (Dec. 5, 2015).

The last meeting was on Dec. 1 last season in Hawkins Arena where Mercer came away with a 64-48 victory. KeKe Calloway scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting, along with five rebounds and four assists. Shannon Titus collected a team-high nine rebounds and four steals in the game while scoring six points.

Kennesaw State owns a 1-1 record on the season after rebounding with a 60-55 victory over Samford on Saturday.

Alexis Poole, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, leads the Owls with an average of 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Poole was named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference list, along with teammate Kamiyah Street. As a team, the Owls were picked sixth in the coaches poll and seventh in the media poll.
