Mercer’s senior class earns its 100th career win
MACON, Ga. – Mercer's five-woman senior class earned its 100th career victory as the Bears staved off Furman in a 66-62 victory at Hawkins Arena on Thursday night.
Â
The Bears improved to 21-7 overall and 13-0 in Southern Conference action with their 33rd consecutive SoCon regular season win. Rachel Selph led Mercer with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting while Amanda Thompson filled up the box score with 10 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Furman fell to 16-12 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Â
Stat of the Game
Thursday's victory was career win number 100 for Mercer's senior class. The five-woman group of KeKe Calloway, Linnea Rosendal, Rachel Selph, Amanda Thompson and Ally Welch is already the program's all-time winningest four-year class.
Â
Player of the Game
Rachel Selph and Amanda Thompson split the honors on Thursday as they powered Mercer to a hard-fought win. Selph did not miss a shot in the second half (5-for-5) and finished with a team-high 20 points while Thompson flirted with a triple-double, all while notching her 15th double-double in 28 games.
Â
How It Happened
The Bears put together a well-rounded first quarter, outscoring Furman 20-5 through 10 minutes. Three-pointers by KeKe Calloway and Tia Benvenuti complimented six points by Selph in the quarter. Mercer's defense forced six Furman turnovers and allowed the Paladins to hit just two field goals in the first quarter.
Â
The lopsided first quarter would prove critical, as the Bears spent the final 30 minutes fighting off Furman, who outscored them 57-46 the rest of the way. Mercer took a 32-20 lead into halftime with nine points from Calloway and eight by Selph. After a three-pointer by Calloway gave Mercer a 42-27 lead in the third quarter, Furman scored 10 of the final 11 points in the frame to cut the Bears' lead to six.
Â
Selph scored seven of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help Mercer seal the win. With a four-point lead, 57-53, with less than one minute on the clock, Thompson pulled down an offensive rebound and found Linnea Rosendal for a key three-pointer to extend the lead. Calloway and Thompson would make Mercer's final six free throw attempts down the stretch.

Coach's Corner
Opening statement:
"Thank goodness we had a good first quarter because we just about let [Furman] come back tonight," said head coach Susie Gardner. "It was one of the best first quarters we've had, but I told our team that Furman wouldn't go away. Credit goes to Furman, but we did not handle their [full-court] press very well tonight. We did some ill-advised things that we shouldn't be doing this late in the season, but thankfully Amanda [Thompson] and Rachel [Selph] came to play for us down the stretch today."
