Bears drop road contest despite first-half lead
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mercer (3-6) fell 14-12 to Winthrop on Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C. The Bears dropped the contest after the Eagles produced a 9-4 second half to generate the Winthrop win. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the early 2-0 deficit, Mercer's Lily Morin and Hailey Rhatigan quickly tied the Bears back up with a goal each. Back-and-forth goals were recorded for both teams until Mercer sparked a 4-0 run including goals by Kelly Hagerty, Rhatigan, Kendall Garrett and Caroline Kerr. The jump extended the Bear's lead 8-5 at the half.
Winthrop jumped the second half with a 3-2 run, with Mercer goals coming from Hagerty and Rhatigan. The Eagles notched back-to-back goals to tie the game up at 10. Catie Snee allowed the Bears to take the lead one last time, earning her first goal of the game, before Winthrop notched four-consecutive goals to claim the 14-11 lead. Snee registered the last goal of the game to tighten the score 14-12 before the final minute ran out.
 NOTABLES
Mercer will open its conference schedule next Friday, March 29 at 4 p.m. against Detroit Mercy before facing Central Michigan at noon on Sunday.
