Bears Best Catamounts, 5-2, in SoCon Opener

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team earned their fourth straight win, topping Western Carolina, 5-2, in its Southern Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
The Catamounts took an early lead, winning the doubles competition. Mercer struck first with its No. 1 pairing of Katie Sidor and Celine Schepers claiming a 6-1 decision over Jordan Strickland and Savannah Taranto. Court No. 2 saw Western Carolina's duo of Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco beat Lucia Gutierrez and Marie Mottet. The Catamounts clinched the doubles competition with No. 3 Alexa Webb and Lauren McCall defeating Alara Hollyfield and Maeva Roquebert, 6-3.
Mercer rallied back claiming five of the six singles points. No. 3 Roquebert downed McCall, 6-2, 7-6. On court No. 5, Mottet topped Carli Deer, 6-3, 7-6. The Bears' No. 1 slotted Sidor earned a hard-fought, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2, victory over Strickland. Mercer clinched the match with No. 4 Schepers besting Taranto, 6-3, 7-6. Court No. 6 saw Guitterez defeat Pezzuco, 6-4, 6-3. The afternoon concluded with the Catamounts taking court No. 2 as Hollyfield fell to Smith, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Mercer will continue its home stand, facing the Cleveland State Vikings on Sunday, March 10, at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
