Bears Handed Mid-Week Loss at Kennesaw State

Mercer squanders four-run lead in 8-5 loss to Kennesaw State
Â
The Owls (23-26) spoiled a strong three-inning start by Mercer starting pitcher Andrew Kane as they played seven runs in the fifth inning to rally past the Bears (26-22). The two teams split their pair of head-to-head contests this spring.
Â
Kane was electric in his fourth start of the year, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out four Owls. He received his first dose of run support with a solo home run by Kel Johnson in the first inning. Johnson's moon shot off the roof of a building well past the 400-foot center-field wall was his 19th of the season.
Â
Bill Knight and Jordan Ammons added to the lead in the third with RBI singles before Collin Price made it a four-run advantage with an RBI double in the fourth. Holton McGaha was Mercer's first arm out of the bullpen, tossing a hitless fourth inning.
Â
Trouble struck for Mercer in the fifth. The Owls' first six batters of the inning reached base as they tagged Will Bowdoin and Nick Spear for seven runs on six hits. Taylor Lobus, who was Mercer's third pitcher in the inning, got the Bears out of the jam.
Â
A pinch-hit double by Garrett Wilkinson in the seventh forced a throwing error that allowed Alex Crotty to score from first base. Kennesaw State would add one run in the home half of the seventh on a fielding error by the Bears.
Â
Mercer put the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but a double play halted the potential rally.
