Mercer Leads SoCon Honor Roll for Fifth Straight Year

Bears boast yet another league-best mark in academic standing
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer placed a Southern Conference-best 303 student-athletes on the 2018-19 Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Wednesday.

Mercer has now led the SoCon with the most student-athletes on the honor roll every academic year since joining the conference. It also marks the third straight year that over 300 Bears were named to the list – 314 in 2016-17 and 309 in 2017-18. Click here to view the full list.

Leading the SoCon's honor roll is one of multiple academic honors that Mercer student-athletes' have achieved in the classroom this year. It comes on the heels of the school winning its fourth consecutive Barrett Bonner Award, as well as boasting the most total academic all-conference selections – fall and spring semesters combined – for four years running.

Breaking Down the Numbers
» Five different Mercer teams led their respective sports – baseball, football, men's basketball, women's basketball and men's golf – on the honor roll.
» A league-leading 33 Bears posted a perfect, 4.0 GPA.
» The Bears also led with 79 student-athletes receiving the Commissioner's Medal (3.8 GPA).
» Mercer boasts 75 more student-athletes on the honor roll than any other team in the SoCon – ETSU is second with 228.

The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists.
