1,022 student-athletes were honored by the Southern Conference
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Mercer Bears paced the Southern Conference with 130 Academic All-SoCon selections, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Southern Conference officials honored a total of 1,022 selections and administered fall and spring sports combined, which came as a result of the majority of athletic competition coming in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 1,022 selections are the second-most for an academic year since the award began in 2002-03. Only the 1,093 honorees in 2019-20 eclipsed this season's total. Six Bears – JR DeRose (men's soccer), Leo Toledo Jr., (men's soccer), Conner Krieger (football), Tanner Hall (baseball), Allie Jones (softball) and Marina Van Sickle (women's cross country / track & field) – and a record 55 SoCon student-athletes achieved a 4.0 grade-point average.
Each of Mercer's athletic programs had at least one student-athlete named to the 2020-21 Academic All-SoCon team. Chad Surman and Samantha Eustace's lacrosse programs each had 16 honorees. 14 of Drew Cronic's football players received recognition, while 13 of Tony Economopoulos' women's soccer student-athletes received a spot on the list. Craig Gibson's baseball program was the last program with double-digit honorees as the league office honored 11 Mercer baseball players.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the semester of competition and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
