Bears Split Day One of UNO Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La.  – The Mercer Bears volleyball squad split a couple of matches on the day to close out the first day of the UNO Invitational.

The Bears went 3-2 against Southern (26-28, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12) and went 2-3 against New Orleans (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 8-15).

MERCER VS SOUTHERN
Set One (26-28) | The Bears had a strong start but the Jags fought their way back towards the end of the set. Southern would take the set with two service aces.

Set Two (26-24) | It was another back-and-forth battle between Mercer and Southern with kills from Annie Karle, Roberta Todd, Brittany Major, and Alexia Morey. The Bears went on a 5-2 run to end the set.

Set Three (19-25) | Malia Randolph and Roberta Todd tried to put the Bears on a run but the Jags went on a 6-2 run to end the set.

Set Four (25-22) | Alexia Morey led the Bears with 5 kills to win the fourth set. Five other Bears had kills to help the score including one from freshman Jovana Babin. The set ended with two Southern errors.

Set Five (15-12) | The deciding set was back and forth in the beginning but Southern went on a 6-1 run to go up. The Bears retaliated with kills from Annie Karle and Alexia Morey. The Bears won the set and match with two service aces from Annie Karle.

MERCER VS NEW ORLEANS
Set One (19-25) | The Bears went down early when the Privateers went on a 7-3 run to start the set. New Orleans made a few errors but the Bears couldn't get ahead to take the set. Â

Set Two (23-25) | It was a back-and-forth battle between the Bears and Privateers but the Privateers eventually pulled it out with a win. Annie Karle and Alexia Morey each had four kills. New Orleans took ended the match on a kill. Â

Set Three (25-20) | The Bears came out strong in the third set strong and Privateers had a few errors. With kills from Annie Karle, Alexia Morey, Jaida Howell, and Brittany Major, Mercer was able to pull ahead and end the set on a Annie Karle kill.

Set Four (20-25) | New Orleans started the set on a 5-1 run. The Bears retaliated late in the set with kills from four different players. With three Privateer errors and three Bears kills, Mercer took the set.

Set Five (8-15) | The Bears went down early in the set and tried to claw their way back. The Privateers wouldn't let up and eventually took the set and the match.

The Bears will play Tennessee State at noon tomorrow to close out the tournament.
