Leonel Toledo Jr. scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute
STATESBORO, Ga. – With the game tied at 2-2 with under ten minutes to go, Mercer men's soccer player Leo Toledo Jr. scored his second goal of the season lifting the Bears to a 3-2 victory over Georgia Southern on Friday night.
Â
Both Toledo Jr.'s goals this year have resulted in game-winning goals. Mercer had three different players score and three different players pick up an assist in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears put the pressure on the Eagles defense early in the contest. At the 17:13 minute mark, Dylan Gaither scored his first collegiate goal putting Mercer ahead, 1-0. Dawson Gideon and Trevor Martineau picked up assists.
Â
Mercer was not done scoring in the first half as two minutes later, Martineau scored the second goal of the game for the Bears. Martineau's goal extended the lead to 2-0. Kareve Richards picked up the assist on the goal. Mercer took the 2-0 lead into halftime. Â
Â
The Eagles would not go away quietly as they slowly answered back. In the 67th minute of the contest, Aldair Cortes scored trimming the Bears lead down to 2-1. Seven minutes later, Adam Davie tied the game for the Eagles at 2-2. With just under ten minutes to go in the contest, Leonel Toledo Jr. dribbled the ball into the box and he found an opening to take a shot. The Eagles goalie did not see the shot and he found the back of the net, putting the Bears ahead, 3-2, which would be being the game-winner. Mercer came away with a 3-2 victory for its second straight win.
