Bears took first before falling in the next three

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer volleyball won the first set but dropped the next three and were defeated by Wofford 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 12-25) in Southern Conference action on Saturday night.

The Bears (8-7, 1-1 SoCon) were led by 13 kills by Annie Karle. Malia Randolph dished out 32 assists in the match. Jaida Howell recorded 10 kills, while Megan Smith led the Bears with 13 digs in the match.

MERCER at WOFFORD
Set One (25-17) | Mercer led, 7-4, and after a kill by Annie Karle, the Bears had an 11-7 lead. Mercer grew the lead to 16-8 on a kill by Roberta Todd. The Bears had a 23-12 lead late in the set before Wofford battled back. A kill by Alexia Morey kill gave the Bears a 25-17 first set win.

Set Two (19-25) | After allowing the first point, the Bears rallied off the next seven taking a 7-1 lead over Wofford. Mercer took advantage of four attack errors by Wofford. The lead did not last long as Wofford answered back taking a 10-9 lead. The lead would go back and forth and with the Bears leading 16-15, Wofford took control as they scored six of the next seven. Wofford took set two, 25-19.

Set Three (23-25) | Wofford came out in the third set by taking an early 6-4 lead. Wofford grew the lead to a 12-4 lead after a 6-0 run. The Bears started chipping away at the lead and a kill by Jaida Howell put the Bears down two, 13-11. Later in the set, the Bears trailed 20-15 but came back to tie the set at 20-20. Mercer took a 23-22 lead but Wofford tallied the last three points taking the set 25-23 over Mercer.

Set Four (12-25) | Mercer needed to win the fourth set to extend the match and early the Bears were down 6-4. Wofford slowly grew the lead to 14-9 before growing its lead to 21-10. Mercer did not have an answer and dropped the set 25-12.

UP NEXT
The Bears to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they host Samford in Hawkins Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m. This is the first time Bears have been home since Aug. 31.
