Dougherty Collects Third Player of the Week Honor

Jaron Dougherty averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds as the Bears went 2-0 against Wofford and Furman.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer sophomore Jaron Dougherty was named the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Dougherty earned her third SoCon honor in the last six weeks after being named the player of the week on Jan. 7 and Jan. 28. She became the first player this season to earn three player of the week nods from the conference. Additionally, she was named the SoCon Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

"We are very proud of Jaron being named player of the week for the third time this season," said Mercer Head Women's Basketball Coach Susie Gardner. "She averaged a double-double which helped us win a couple of key SoCon games."

Dougherty averaged 16.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game against Wofford and Furman last week, leading the Bears to a pair of victories. Both Wofford and Furman were ranked third in the SoCon at the opening tip of each game. She led the Bears with 17 points and 11 rebounds against the Paladins on Saturday for her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. The Buford, Ga., native added 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks against Wofford on Thursday.

On the season, Dougherty ranks third in the conference with 15.6 points per game. She also leads the SoCon in field goals made with 170 while ranking 12th nationally. Additionally, she is fourth in the conference with 34 blocks on the year.

The Bears will stay at home next week as they welcome Samford to Hawkins Arena on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip. Â
