Over the next few weeks MercerBears.com will be speaking with several members of the Mercer University Athletics staff. These people work behind the scenes. It's our hope that after reading each of these articles, Bear fans will come to appreciate just how important each person is to Mercer success.
Our next profile focuses on Stephen Waldman, the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations for Mercer. He sat down with MercerBears.com for a short interview which follows below:
Describe your jobs description?
I am the Assistant Director of Media Relations covering men's soccer, women's basketball, softball and men's and women's golf teams. I produce press releases, game programs and contest recaps, compile notes and statistics as well as coordinate interviews with the media.
How did you get started in this career field?
I have always been very passionate about sports, and once I got to college I wanted to find a way to stay involved. I started working in the sports information office in the fall of my freshman year and absolutely loved it. By the end of the semester, I went in to meet with my boss to discuss what I could change my major to and how I could turn my passion into a career.
Â
What's a typical day look like for you?
One of the best parts about my job is that there really isn't a typical day. I'm always doing something different and tackling new challenges to better promote our student-athletes.
Â
What are some of the challenges you face, and what are the rewards?
Not knowing what a typical day looks like is also one of the biggest challenges. New stories can pop up out of nowhere. The biggest reward for me is seeing the student-athletes get the recognition and attention that they deserve.
