About Sydney
Campbell has been a part of the Mercer track and field program for three seasons and will be graduating early this spring. She garnered several accolades in her first collegiate season, making the 2018 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in the 100-meter run and long jump, while earning a spot on the All-SoCon team for the 4x100-meter relay.
Campbell finds herself in the Bears' record book 11 times. She occupies the top eight records in the long jump with her best jump being 5.85 meters at the Tiger Track Classic on April 13, 2018. She is also ranked in the top-10 in the 100-meter category. Her personal best of 11.95 seconds also came at the Tiger Track Classic and put her second overall in Mercer history. She also has the fourth (12.07) and ninth (12.17) fastest times in program history.
In the classroom, Campbell has twice been honored by the Southern Conference, earning a place on the SoCon's Academic Honor Roll in both 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Coach's Thoughts
I've only had the privilege of coaching Sydney for one season," said head coach Roosevelt Lofton. "She is graduating ahead of schedule because she would officially be a senior on the track for the 2020-21 season.
This season, she was on the right path to do some great things. We set a goal early in the season to win the SoCon long jump and jump over six meters. I have no doubt that if the season had continued, she would have accomplished that. In her one and only outdoor meet this year, she won the South Alabama Opener long jump and the 100m with a leap of 5.57m and time of 12.31 seconds.
One of her best long jumps was in her only indoor meet where she jumped 5.68m at the University of South Carolina. That jump was so impressive because it came after spending last spring and the fall 2019 season in a boot for a foot injury.
Sydney has been a leader and great mentor to our young freshman long jumper Chidimma Uwaomah. I do believe that if we had the conference meet this year Sydney would also had been a true force in the 100m."
