Anna Sovic is a member of the women's tennis team
MACON, Ga. – It takes a special combination of academic excellence and athletic skill to be able to succeed as a student-athlete at Mercer University. Throughout the next few months, we will highlight these young men and women who have the privilege of calling themselves a Bear.
Â
Today, we highlight women's tennis senior Anna Sovic.
Sovic, a native of Totterdam, Holland, played four years at Mercer. During her senior season, which was cut short because of COVID-19, Sovic was second on the team with five single wins. Besides her five singles win, she had four doubles wins. Sovic first appeared for the Bears during the 2016-17 season before her season was cut short because of an injury.
Why did you choose Mercer?
The challenging academics, the beautiful campus and the ambitious sport spirit got me right away. Apart from putting an emphasis on educational and athletic performance, how you development as a person matters as much. The team and coaches were so relaxed. There was no pretending. Mercer felt like home from the very first moment. Â
Â
What is your favorite moment at Mercer?
Stepping on the court to play my first match again after being out for a long time because of an ACL injury. I was the last one on the court, and the team was so fired up. I won my match in a close three-setter, and even though it wasn't a big win, I realized how much I missed the feeling of competing with my teammates by my side.
Â
What is your favorite sporting event you have been a part of at Mercer?
When men's tennis  advanced to the finals of the SoCon Tournament. They beat Furman as the underdogs in a nerve-wrecking 4-3 match.Â
Â
Do you have any game day rituals?
Confession time: I perform and dance in front of my mirror on my game-day playlist while getting ready. It gives me confidence, gets me in a good mood, and I dance the stress away.Â
Â
What are you working to get your degree in and what is your end goal?
I am pursuing a degree in International Business with a minor in management. My ultimate goal would be to get my Masters after graduating and to eventually have a career where I can combine business and sustainability, since I believe these two do not, but definitely should go, hand-in-hand.Â
