The program posted an impressive 3.49 GPA in 2019-20
MACON, Ga. – Head coach Roosevelt Lofton's track & field squad received academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday afternoon.
Lofton, who was hired in November 2019, inherited a program which had posted no lower than a 3.2 GPA each of the past two academic years. In his first semester at the helm, the veteran head coach guided his student-athletes on and off the track.
In the classroom, the Bears had a 3.49 GPA for both the fall and spring semesters and posted six victories in their lone outdoor meet.Â
264 different programs were honored by the USTFCCAÂ as all-academic teams for outstanding work in the classroom. In order to receive recognition, a program must have a 3.0 GPA cumulative GPA and include all student-athletes on the team's squad list.
Mercer was one of 127 programs to boast a 3.4 or higher GPA.
"This is a tremendous honor for our team to receive," stated Lofton.
Earlier this spring, the program placed five student-athletes – Sydney Campbell, Lauryn Dancy, Tessola Duncan, Marion Meadows and Cherrish Wright – on the Southern Conference's Spring 2020 All-Academic team. Each of those five student-athletes were also named to the league's honor roll which also included Tara Davis, Markiema Lancaster, Samaiya O'dneal, Chidimma Uwaomah and Kennedi Weston-Shields, giving the team 10 honorees in all.
