The Bears are scheduled to play seven matches with three at home
MACON, Ga. – Head women's soccer coach Tony Economopoulos unveiled his program's fall 2020 slate, which features seven matches, including three inside Betts Stadium.
Economopoulos led the Bears to a 16-4 record in 2019, the best in Mercer women's soccer history. He won his 100th career match with a 2-0 shutout of Furman in the regular season finale.
"First, I'm thankful for the leadership of President Bill Underwood, our athletic administration and our medical staff for prioritizing the health of our student-athletes and doing everything they can to try to keep them healthy," said Economopoulos. "We are very fortunate to be one of the 50 schools trying to play this fall. Our athletes are excited about the opportunity to play. They've worked very hard on and off the field. We're excited about our seven-game schedule."
Mercer will open its fall campaign on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against in-state foe Georgia State. The Bears topped the Panthers 2-0 last season and are seeking their 12th win against the Atlanta-based institution. Georgia State head coach Ed Joyce is 25-36-13 at the helm.
Six days after the season opener, Mercer will square off against a familiar foe in The Citadel on Sept. 17 for a mid-afternoon contest at 3 p.m for a non-confernce match. The Citadel's Ciaran Traquair is in his fourth season at the school has an overall record of 25-47-2.
One week later, Mercer will take on its second in-state opponent of the season when it travels to Georgia Southern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Bears and Eagles have not met since 2014, the same year that Mercer captured the SoCon Tournament crown. Head coach Josh Moffet went 6-11-1 and enters year two as head coach.
Â
After the match at Georgia Southern on Sept. 24, the Bears will not play until Oct. 8 when they make the trek to Mobile, Ala., to play the South Alabama Jaguars for the first time since 2012 and the fifth-time in program history. Head coach Richard Moodie guided the Jaguars to the 2019 NCAA Tournament and is 38-19-5 in three seasons at South Alabama.
The Bears will play at home for the first time in the month of October on the 10th at 3 p.m. when they battle The Citadel for the second time.
Mercer's last road contest of the fall slate is set for 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 against Georgia State.Â
The Bears will only have 48 hours to rest as they close out the fall campaign against the University of Alabama-Birmingham at 6 p.m. on Oct. 17. Erika Demers is entering her fourth season in charge of the Blazers and is 27-19-10. Mercer last took on UAB in 2015 and prevailed with a dominant 5-1 victory.
The games were added to Mercer's schedule after the Southern Conference voted to allow non-conference contests in the fall at institutional discretion. The SoCon delayed its fall seasons with the intent of playing in the spring.
Social distancing and use of masks will be in place.
