Mercer defeats Trojans, completes homestand
MACON, Ga. – With two players reaching double-doubles and a strong third quarter, Mercer (2-1) defeated Troy (2-1) in a Monday night matchup in Hawkins Arena by a 75-66 score line. The contest featured the defending champions from the SoCon and the Sun Belt. Mercer and Troy went back-and-forth in the first portion of the first quarter until Mercer took the lead and never looked back in the game. The opening quarter featured five lead changes.
For the second consecutive game, Mercer controlled the turnover battle - winning 16 to Troy's 15. Nearly 50% (30-of-75) of the points were scored while in the paint.
How it Happened
Mercer and Troy traded the game's first 13 points in the opening three minutes until consecutive layups by Shannon Titus and Erin Gutierrez put Mercer in front by five to set the tempo for the game. The Trojans whittled deficits from five down to two, but Mercer would inch it up as much as 19, like they did in the third quarter. Mercer secured the win thanks to a 23-point third quarter where they shot 60% (6-of-10) from the field to separate themselves from Troy. Four Bears – Jaron Dougherty (19), Amoria Neal-Tysor (13), Endia Banks (13) and Titus (18) – hit double-figures in points. Dougherty and Titus also notched double doubles for the second consecutive game, Dougherty scored 19 and collected 13 rebounds, while Titus tallied 18 points and nabbed 13 boards.

Looking back on the quick homestand
"One thing we wanted to do was to get better at some things we didn't do as well versus App State. We've had two games where we really progressed. We've really tried to emphasize our rebounding. Jaron and Shannon are just going to the glass like crazy, which is exactly like we need. We just have so much respect for Troy. They've got a great program; they consistently win their conference and go to the NCAA tournament. This was a huge win for our program. We fought, we battled. They play a different style of play and it's important for us to play these types of games in non-conference to see what our weaknesses are, so we can get ready for our conference season.
Notables
• Since the SoCon Championship game last March, it was the third time Mercer had at least two collect double-digit rebounds
• For the second time this season, Mercer scored 19 points in the first quarter
• For the second consecutive game, the Bears had a +8 advantage in points scored in the paint
Up Next
Mercer will venture away from the comfortable confines of Hawkins Arena to take on Georgia from Stegeman Coliseum. The tip from Athens is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 18.
