Bears drop 67-52 decision to in-state foe
ATHENS, Ga. – Despite a strong first quarter, the Mercer Bears couldn't hold on against the 19th-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs in the first road game of the season. Both setbacks on the season are to NCAA tournament teams from a season ago.
How it Happened
The Bears (2-2) started out with a back-and-forth that was highlighted by a Shannon Titus half-court shot for the lead at the end of the period for a 14-12 advantage. A cold third quarter slowed the Bears from digging all of the way out of the hole to even the score. The hosts (3-0) used a suffocating defense and a 50% shooting performance from the field to separate themselves from Mercer. The Bears notched 16 points off of turnovers compared to the Lady Bulldogs' seven.
Quotables – Head Coach Susie Gardner
On the game
"We got came out great in the first quarter. Good decisions set the tone for the opening minutes. Shooting 8 percent in the 3rd and being outscored 17-7 are what really hurt us. We forced a lot of turnovers and had a lot of positives. I'm proud of how they battled and competed all game. I'm proud of our guys."
On what can be used for the Gardner-Webb game
"We'll go over film and see the positives from this game. We're definitely growing as a team and have already gone through adversity."
Notables
• Three Bears – Amoria Neal-Tysor (19), Jaron Dougherty (14) and Shannon Titus (12) – scored in double-figures
• 10 points were scored off of the fast break
Up Next
Mercer will stay on the road, but head to North Carolina where they'll matchup with Gardner-Webb this coming Sunday, with a 2 p.m. tip from Boiling Springs.
