Bears pile on four, power past Furman
MACON, Ga. – With a spot in the SoCon Men's Soccer Championship on the line versus Furman, Mercer put on a championship-level performance at Betts Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (9-7-1) used three second half goals to put away the Paladins (7-9-1) in front of a raucous crowd to clinch the appearance versus either top-seeded UNCG or fourth-seeded Belmont.
Dylan Gaither wasted little time in getting Mercer on the board, shooting it past Furman's Ben Roberts in the seventh minute of the contest. Shortly after the intermission, Gaither made it a double when he converted the penalty following a poor challenge from Furman just inside the 18-yard box in the 51st minute. Nearly nine minutes following the PK, Gaither completed the hat trick when he was assisted by Kadeem Agard, which firmly put the match in Mercer's control. Just before the match was final, Logan Longo added a final goal for good measure in the 88th minute, following assists from Trevor Martineau and Natnael McDonald.
With the hat trick, Gaither now has 11 goals on the season, which paces the Mercer offense. The Bears fired 19 shots on Furman's Roberts, compared to just conceding just six for Furman.
Trevor McMullen tallied his fourth clean sheet against SoCon opposition, and second versus the Paladins. The keeper only had to make four saves in the win.
As a result of the victory, Mercer will play in the SoCon Men's Soccer Championship on either Saturday, November 13th or Sunday, November 14. When the opponent and location are determined, Mercer athletics will make an announcement.
