3/26/2021 9:11:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The 32nd edition of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships are set for April 1 on ESPN2.
INDIANAPOLIS – Mercer redshirt senior guard Ross Cummings has been selected to the Men's 3-Point Championship roster for the 32nd annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships. The event will air live on ESPN2 on April 1 at 9 p.m. ET.
Â
The 32nd edition of the contest will take place at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University Campus in Indianapolis. Cummings is one of eight players set to participate in the nationally televised event. A complete roster of participants will be released at a later date.
Â
Intersport, producers of the event, invites 24 of the nation's elite men's and women's college basketball players to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships (eight dunkers, along with eight men's and eight women's shooters). The program showcases the dunking and sharp-shooting talents of the nation's top college basketball players during the Men's 3-point Championship, the Rocket Mortgage Women's 3-Point Championship, the Battle of the Champions, the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship and the IHOP Team Shootout.
Â
Cummings recently completed his fifth season at Mercer and led the program to an appearance in the Southern Conference Championship game. He reached two milestones during the season, scoring his 1000th point and becoming just the third player in program history to knock down at least 200 career 3-pointers. The Dickson, Tenn., native has poured in 1,244 points and made 246 treys. He currently ranks 16th in program history in scoring and is only 11 3-pointers away from breaking the career 3-pointers made record, which is currently held by Langston Hall.
Â
Cummings ranked second among Mercer players with an average of 13.2 points per game and led the squad in points per game in conference games (13.8). His season average of 13.2 points per contest placed him 15th in the Southern Conference. He was one only seven SoCon players to hit at least 40 percent of their 3-pointers, knocking down 40.3 percent (73-of-181) of his attempts. His 73 connections from downtown were third best in the conference. He holds two top-10 rankings in three-pointers made in a single season, sitting second (101 in 2018-19) and 10th with his 73 treys in 2020-21. In the career ranks, Cummings boasts the second most 3-pointers made (246) sixth best 3-point field goal percentage (40.4 percent).
Â
For more than 30 years, several of the top players in college basketball have competed in the College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships including: Gary Payton, Steve Nash, Jason Terry, Kyle Korver, Bobby Hurley, Michael Finley, Allan Houston, Wesley Matthews, Yogi Ferrell, Cappie Pondexter, Katie Gearlds, Kristi Toliver, Tiffany Hayes and Ariel Atkins.
