Bears close out the season with a 5-2 win over Western Carolina

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team closed out the season with a 5-2 win on Senior Day from the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

Prior to the match, the Bears honored their lone senior Maeva Roquebert.

In doubles, Western Carolina took the first match as Emily Elliott and Antonella Benavides defeated Kristin Yordanova and Lekha Varudandi, 6-2. Mercer responded by winning at No. 1. The team of Mary Courville and Maeva Roquebert defeated Jacy Smith and Julia Pezzuco, 6-3. Needing to win the last match to win the point, Mercer's Lauren Rich and Alara Hollyfield came up big and defeated Anna Uljanov and Kata Foldeak, 6-4.

Mercer took a 2-0 lead quickly in singles play as the Bears won on court six when Kristin Yordanova defeated Emily Elliott, 6-2, 6-2. The lead was cut in half after the Catamounts won No. 5 singles.

Mercer continued to battle, and Rich made the match 3-1 in favor of the Bears after a win. Rich defeated Hoda Habib, 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth flight.

The final three matches all went three sets. Mary Courville was the first three-set match completed. She won 6-4 in set one before Jacy Smith won 6-2 in set two. Courville clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-0 win on court two.

At No. 1 singles, Maeva Roquebert dropped the first set 6-2. In a tough second set, Roquebert came back and won, 7-6, forcing a third set. However, she came up short and dropped the third set, 6-3.

In the final match of the day, Alara Hollyfield won the first set 6-4 at No. 3 singles. After falling in the second set, Hollyfield battled back and won 6-0 in the third set. Mercer came away with a 5-2 victory.
