Bears Complete Opening Day of SoCon Championships

Cherrish Wright advanced to Sunday’s finals in three events.
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Cherrish Wright advanced to Sunday's finals in three events – the 100-meter hurdles and dash and the 200-meter dash – as the Bears completed the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Championships.
Day one in the Cullowhee, N.C., began bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with the longest running event of the championships, the 10K. Ashley McMahon came home eighth in the race, setting a school record of 37:54.96. Marina Van Sickle followed in ninth and ran a personal best of 38:06.81, which is now the third-fastest time in Mercer history.
The Bears were scheduled to compete in the 1500-meter preliminary, but due to participants not starting, no preliminary event was run and participants will now compete in the finals on Sunday at 1:20 p.m.
Wright, who entered the SoCon Championships with the fastest 100-meter time in the conference, finished third in the prelims and advanced to Sunday's finals. Her time of 14.06 seconds is now third in program history.
In the 400-meter dash preliminary, Carlandra Jones won with a stellar time of 55.58, the fourth best time in program. Tara Davis also advanced to Sunday's finals with an eighth-place finish and the ninth-fastest time in Mercer history. Davis crossed the finish line in 57.53 seconds and set a new PR.
Six Bears – Wright, Lauryn Dancy, Ceylani Rembert, Kennedi Weston-Shields, Chidimma Uwaomah and Hannah Cooper – represented Mercer in the 100-meter dash. Wright and Dancy both advanced to Sunday's finals, running second and fourth respectively. Wright's second place time of 11.93 seconds is the sixth fastest time in the program's history. Although Rembert (12.53 seconds) and Cooper (12.93 seconds) did not advance, both runners set PRs.
Giulia Giorgi ran 13th in the 800-meter run. Giorgi was the lone Bear in the event and finished the race in 2:26.48.
Wright ended Mercer's day by advancing to the finals for the third time with a preliminary race-winning time of 24.16 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Wright's Saturday performance ranks second in program history Despite not advancing, Weston-Shields finished 12th and set a new PR of 25.52 seconds.
