Mercer added Marqu’es Webb as Assistant Coach
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball Head Coach Susie Gardner announced the hiring of Marqu'es Webb as her program's new Assistant Coach on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
"I'm really excited about adding Marqu'es to our staff for many reasons," Gardner said. "She was a great post player at Vanderbilt, so our posts will be able to grow under her direction. She was also a student-athlete who knew how to balance academics at a great institution and can be a mentor for our players. She has great passion and energy for the game, and I think our players can really learn and grow from her experience as a player in both the collegiate and professional ranks, as well as her coaching experience. I could not be more excited to bring Marqu'es to Mercer. She is going to add so much to our program."
Â
Webb will primarily work with Mercer's post players and comes to Macon after spending the last two seasons at Vanderbilt, her alma mater. Webb spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant coach after serving as the director of player development the year prior.
Â
Last season, she instructed 2020 All-Freshman honoree Koi Love who led the Commodores with 20.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 47.1 percent (65-of-138) in eight games of a COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign. Webb assisted with student-athlete development programs as well as community service initiatives and special events in her role in 2019-20.
Â
"I'm beyond excited to join the Mercer women's basketball family," Webb said. "What Coach Gardner has done at Mercer has been nothing short of amazing, and I am honored for the opportunity to help continue that championship tradition. I'm looking forward to building relationships with our girls and getting down to Macon to get started. Go Bears!"
Â
Prior to returning to the Commodores, Webb played professionally for two years overseas in the Czech Republic for BK Zabiny Brno.Â
Â
As a student-athlete with the Commodores, Webb played in 119 games with 80 starts. She netted 875 points and collected 703 rebounds in her career. The Montgomery, Ala., native was a member of the last Vandy squad to reach the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14. She was also elected the SEC's Women's Basketball Leadership Council chair. Additionally, Webb was named the team's Passion Player of the Year as a senior.
Â
Webb graduated from Vanderbilt in 2017 with a degree in sociology.
