Ochoa last competed at Alabama A&M.
MACON, Ga. – For the second time in less than seven days, head track and field coach Roosevelt Lofton has added a transfer to his roster for the 2022 season. Lofton announced Tuesday that former Alabama A&M standout Jaziah Ochoa will join the squad.
"Jaziah has a lot of upside and can come in and help [2021 All-Freshman selection] Tara Davis boost the program in the long sprint events," remarked Lofton. "She will be counted on to bring leadership and much needed experience to our program."
Ochoa ran cross country and track at Alabama A&M, setting a 5K personal best of 21:00.7 at the SWAC Championships where she finished 24th. Despite not competing in the 2021 track and field season, Ochoa set a 1500-meter run PR at the 2020 Jaguar Open (5:11.45) and claimed a silver medal. During the indoor season, she set personal bests in the 800-meter run, completing the race in 2:22.53 at the Carolina Challenge, and in the 600-meter dash. Her 600-meter PR came at the Jim Green Invitational where she finished just outside the top ten, crossing the line in 11th with a time of 1:39.39.
Ochoa competed at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, running two seasons of varsity cross country and three seasons of varsity track and field. She led the Raiders to a state championship in 2018 and 2019 and a state runner-up finish in 2017. She won three consecutive district championships in the 800-meter dash from 2017-19 and claimed a podium spot at the 2019 region meet. Additionally, she was a three-time state qualifier int the 4x800-meter relay.
She was a Presidential Honor Roll member all four years in high school and participated in JROTC, National Speech and Debate Club, Marine Biology Club, Cat Crusade Feline Rescue and as a volunteer AAU track and field coach. She plans to major in biology and desires to be a physician's assistant with a focus in emergency medicine.
