Mercer Falls to Auburn in Exhibition Match

The Bears went 1-1 in exhibition matches.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears concluded exhibition play with a 2-0 loss to Power-5 foe Auburn in Betts Stadium on Saturday night.
With the field soggy and steady rain leading up to kickoff, the Orange & Black defense dug in and held Auburn scoreless in the first half. The Mercer backline did not allow the Tigers to attempt a shot until the 20th minute, and freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Bell showed poise in the net, making the save. Bell was challenged just five minutes later and dove to her right, making a beautiful diving stop and flicking the ball beyond the right post.
Mercer's Lana Whitfield put a shot on target in the 31st minute but could not convert. Auburn regained possession and placed a pair of shots on target prior to the intermission, but they were no match for Bell. Jordyn Ebert entered the contest in the 43rd minute and immediately made a save, sending the teams to the break scoreless.
"In the first half I thought our defense was good," said Coach Tony Economopoulos. "Auburn had more shots than us, but I was proud of the way we played throughout the first 45 minutes. "We came out flat in the second half, and Auburn scored twice. They created more chances, but Jordyn [Ebert] made two huge saves. That's what you want in a game like this though is to see weaknesses and areas that need improvement. Overall, I'm happy with where the team is as we conclude preseason."
Ebert saved the first two shots sent her direction in the second half, but the Tigers scored in the 51st minute to take a 1-0 lead and added insurance in the 55th minute. Mercer generated an opportunity when Kylie Buchanan was fouled inches outside the box, but her shot went high of the goal. Aliah Kitchens put a shot on target in the 68th minute, but Auburn's Makenna Garcia snagged the attempt to keep Mercer scoreless. Mercer was unable to convert off Lucy Brand's free kick in the 86th minute or a corner kick with under 30 seconds to play, and fell, 2-0.
Despite the defeat, Bell made four saves while Ebert made six. Mercer will open the regular season at Georgia State with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 19 before hosting Campbell on Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. Â
