Late goal sinks Mercer
MACON, Ga. -- The Mercer men's soccer team fell for the first time in the young season, to Georgia State, in a physical non-conference match at a sunny Betts Stadium.
A penalty kick by the Panthers in the 75th minute is what separated the two sides, but MU came to fight for all 90.
The contest featured a combined 12 fouls, eight of which were called on the Bears.
Even after Georgia State connected on the aforementioned penalty in the late stages of the contest, Mercer never backed down. 10 minutes after GSU struck, Brant Zulauf made an impressive save to keep Mercer down just by one score. The Bears' backline held tight for all 90 when GSU attackers shot at Zulauf. With mere seconds left to go in the contest, Michael Ille's shot on goal to tie it sailed just left in an attempt for extra time.
Zulauf, the MU keeper from Alpharetta, Georgia, saved six GSU shots in the 90 minutes of the match.
While the Orange & Black never found the back of the net - Trevor Martineau, a senior forward, and Angel Gonzalez, a sophomore midfielder - each registered two shots. Dylan Gaither, a junior midfielder, had a shot on goal, but was just off of the mark.
Mercer will hit the road for the first time this Friday, September 3, when they will face off against North Florida. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. from Jacksonville, Florida. Two days later on the fifth, the Bears will continue the Florida swing for a match with Florida Gulf Coast, which will kick off at 5 p.m.
