Â
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mercer women's soccer team played the host ETSU Buccaneers to a scoreless draw in the final match of the weekend docket to post four of a possible six points to open SoCon play.
"To have a four-point weekend is big," said head coach Tony Economopoulos. Â "It will give us positive momentum before we go against some of the league's best in Samford and Chattanooga."
Both sides played a close, physical contest with a red card, three yellow cards to student-athletes and thirty fouls combined in the second league match for both sides.
Graduate student goalkeeper, Jordyn Ebert, made the necessary stops to keep the hosts off the board. The Suwanee, Georgia native made five saves from nine shots by the Bucs (3-2-3) attack.
Mercer (4-3-2, 1-0-1 SoCon) fired 14 shots – five on target - on ETSU's Shu Oba, the reigning league defensive player of the week. Midfielder, Chandler Lewis-Jenkins – another Suwanee, Georgia, product – led the Bears' attack with four shots, with a pair being on target. Fellow midfielder, Kendall Cook, had three to her name.
"She (Oba) did a great job of frustrating our attack and did well when attempting to break down our chances," added Economopoulos.
Three Bears – Lucy Brand, Eberts and Elizabeth Hargis - clocked the entirety of the 110-minute match.
The result marks Ebert's third clean sheet of the season, and two of which have come in SoCon play.
Undefeated in their last three, the Orange & Black will welcome Samford for their first home league game on Friday, October 1st. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. from the friendly confines of Betts Stadium.
