Mercer will host the Linger Longer Invitational in March 2022.
2021-22 Schedule
MACON, Ga. – Head men's golf coach Jason Payne announced his squad's 2021-22 schedule on Wednesday morning, and the slate feature nine regular season tournaments.
"I am excited to hit the course with this group of student-athletes," remarked Payne, who returned to Mercer in July for his second stint as head coach. "We pieced together a very challenging schedule that will allow us to play a variety of courses and prepare us for postseason play beginning with the Southern Conference tournament. Our goal is to build a championship-caliber program, and this is one way that helps us start on that path. I am looking forward to a great season."
The season begins on Sept. 12 with three days and 54 holes of golf at the True Blue Golf Club in Pawley's Island, S.C. for the Golfweek Fall Invitational. After the three-day event in South Carolina, the Bears will take a week off before traveling to Sapphire, N.C., for Western Carolina's JT Poston Invitational (Sept. 27-28). Mercer will play 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the final day of golf.
The Bears will remain in Georgia for their first tournament in October as they play in the Georgia State Invitational from October 11-12. The two-day event features 54 holes of goal, 36 on Oct. 11 and 18 on Oct. 12 with golfers competing at the prestigious Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.
The Orange & Black will conclude the fall at a tournament hosted by Southern Conference member UNCG. UNCG's Grandover College is set for Oct. 24-25 at the Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, N.C.
The spring portion of the schedule features five regular season tournaments, including back-to-back events in the Peach State, but it will begin with a trip to sunny Florida in mid-February. Beginning Feb. 13, the Bears will play 18 holes of golf at the Hammock Creek Golf Club for three days. UNCG will host the neutral site event.
Mercer's final February tournament sends the squad to stunning Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate (Feb. 21-22), sponsored by Francis Marion.
The Bears' lone home tournament of the 2021-22 campaign comes in late March, as Mercer will co- host the Linger Longer Invitational (March 20-22) at the Great Waters Golf Club in Greensboro, Ga. Golfers will play 18 holes per day.
The last of back-to-back events in Georgia will happen when Mercer travels two hours to Augusta for the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational. The prominent, two-day event will begin April 2 and features the likes of Power-5 schools Alabama, Illinois, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Texas. The Bears will also face off against SoCon foes Furman and Chattanooga. '
The Bears' final tune-up prior to the SoCon Championship will be in Spartanburg, S.C. when they participate in the Wofford Invitational (April 11-12) at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Following that, the Bears will return to Georgia for the SoCon Championship. The championship will be played in Greensboro, Ga., making it Mercer's second trip to the city, however, golf will take place at The Oconee.
Should an individual golfer or the team qualify for an NCAA Regional, the Orange & Black will compete from May 16-18 at one of six predetermined locations – Ol' Colony Golf Club (University of Alabama), PGA National Resort, Champion Course (FAU), OSU Golf Club, Scarlet Course (Ohio State University), The Reserve at Spanos Park (University of the Pacific), Traditions Club (Texas A&M University) or The Course at Yale (Yale University).
The NCAA Championship will begin May 27 and conclude on June 1. Both the individual and team championships will take place in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Grayhawk Golf Club with Arizona State University serving as the host institution. To view the complete schedule, please click here.
