Mercer to face off with Bellarmine to open 2022 campaign
MACON, Ga. – Mercer will kick off the Division I slate with a familiar opponent – Bellarmine – at Five Star Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Series History
The Bears and Knights, former SoCon foes, are meeting for the 11th time overall tomorrow and leading the Division I slate for the second straight season. Bellarmine took both decisions last year – a 9-7 contest in Macon and an 11-8 game in Louisville, Ky. Five goals in the fourth took Bellarmine over the hump in the season finale for the Bears last May. Taylor Dooley's four points on just five shots (3G/1A) led the Mercer attack and was followed with Nick Rockefeller's hat trick.
Scouting Mercer
Mercer is led by Wesley Chairs and Ashton Woods – two All-SoCon preseason picks – for the 2022 season. Chairs claimed 23 ground balls in 2021 and Woods had the 11th-best faceoff percentage in Division I last year. The Bears return a pair of players – Sean Goldsmith and Taylor Dooley – who notched at least 20 points a season ago. In the two matchups with Bellarmine in 2021, Woods claimed an impressive 38-of-41 faceoffs.
Defensively, Garrett LeClaire and Chairs caused a combined 27 turnovers in 2021. Mercer returns a trio in the cage, which combined for 145 saves last season.
Scouting Bellarmine
The Knights will bring back four of its top six scorers to boost their offense in Kyle Playsted, Benny O'Rourk, Luke Legnard and Christian Della Rosca. John Robbins, the ASUN's Defensive Player of the Year, will anchor the Bellarmine defense in 2022. BU will look to JC Higginbotham in the cage, as he stopped 145 shots and was tabbed with All-ASUN accolades in the preseason.
