Bears Come Back in the Fifth Set

MACON, GA - Mercer won in the fifth set against the Wofford Terriers after rallying back from 1-2 deficit. The final match score was 3-2.
Set One | The two teams stayed neck and neck tying at five, six, and 10. Mercer would gain momentum with a 3-0 scoring run. Annie Karle and Jaidia Howell had multiple big kills to keep the Bears in the lead at the first timeout (14-11). Wofford stayed close on their tails, but with errors from the Terriers, Mercer maintained the lead for the rest of the set. Howell's multiple kills pushed the Bears to take the set 25-19.Â
Set Two | The second set brought the same energy with big taps from Rachel Bell. The teams kept a one-point difference till the - pulled ahead at the first time out (13-11). Wofford would continue to pull away and take the set 25-18.
Set Three | Mercer tried to retaliate, but Wofford stayed on their hills tying up for most of the match. Lillian Beardsley picked up multiple kills, but due to multiple errors, the Terriers would take a 12-8 lead at the first timeout. Strong kills from Karle and Waigers lessened the deficit. Wofford went on a 5-1 scoring run and eventually took the set, 25-18.
Set Four | The Bears started off this set with a great rally and continued with a gorgeous service ace from Kiera McCarles. The teams stayed close for most of the match with Mercer gaining a lead at the first timeout (12-9). Mercer continues to hold the lead after multiple errors from the Terriers and kills from Karle. Back-to-back Mercer kills would force a time-out at 21-15. Mercer kept the momentum up and took the set 25-16.
Set Five | Wofford demonstrated a blast of energy and took the first two points. The Bears quickly retaliated with a big kill from Karle to tie it up at 2. Mercer continued with multiple big kills from Karle and powerful blocks throughout the set. With the side switch, the Bears trail 6-8 in the fifth set. Mercer pushed a time-out as they took the lead (9-8). The Bears continued to dominate with back-to-back kills from Bell. Mercer rallied for their last two points and won the set 15-10.
UP NEXT
Mercer will continue conference play at home on Friday(Oct. 21) against Western Carolina at 7p.m. This will be the Bears' Dig Orange Match.Â
