Mercer Battles Top 20 Team To End
Macon, Ga—The Mercer Bears dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to the North Carolina Greensboro Spartans Saturday night at Betts Stadium
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams played on even footing throughout the night, and the lone goal of the contest came 17 minutes in when Marco Milanese made a pass from midfield up the left wing to J.C. Ngando. He was able to work his way through heavy traffic and from 18 yards out scorched a low right footed shot that snuck inside the left goal post.
Mercer (5-4-6 overall, 1-1-2 SoCon) had its share of quality scoring chances against the Spartans (10-1-4 overall, 3-0-1), who are ranked in the Top 20 in three national polls. Dylan Gaither had a penalty kick with 14:44 left in the first half, and was stopped on a leaping save by Niclas Wild. With two and a half minutes left in the second half, Gaither had another great shot from about 25 yards out on a free kick, but again Wild was able to dive and punch the ball just wide of the left post.
NOTABLES
The Bears wrap up the regular season Saturday Oct. 29 hosting ETSU at 7 p.m. UNCG finishes its regular season at Wofford that same day
