Get No. 3 Seed For SoCon Tourney
Macon, Ga—The Mercer Bears capped their regular season with a 3-2 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers Saturday night at Betts Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On Senior night, it was seniors who led the way. None more so than Michael Ille who had all three goals, registering the Bears' first hat trick of the season. Ille got the scoring started with an assist from Ousman Jabang, with just under four minutes played. It took less than 10 minutes for him to strike again, this time taking a feed from Dylan Gaither and putting in a left footed shot for his second goal of the night.
Before the half ended Lucas Lightner struck for ETSU, making it 2-1 at the break. Fifteen minutes into the second half Ille again found himself wide open in the six-yard box off the left post and rapped in another Jabang centering feed for his third goal of the night, and team leading sixth of the season.
There were nervous moments at the end, though, as Tarik Pannholzer scored for the Buccaneers with just less than five minutes to play. The Bears were able to withstand the pressure at the end and hold on for the victory.
NOTABLES
The SoCon tournament first round games are Friday Nov. 4. The Bears will play against VMI in a game hosted by ETSU, which earned the number two seed, and will play the winner of the Mercer-VMI game.
