Bears Battle in Five

MACON, GA - The Mercer Bears go 2-3Â against UNC Greensboro in the full 5 sets.
Set One | The Bears came out hot in the first set and took a strong 12-7 lead at the first timeout. Mercer continued their lead with big kills from Annie Karle and Kiera McCarles. The Spartans chipped away at their lead to tie it at 17. Paige Wagers helped keep the momentum for the Bears and force a timeout at 21-23. It was not enough and UNCG took the set 25-21.Â
Set Two | The teams stayed neck and neck for most of the set with the Bears taking a 15-12 take lead at the first timeout. The Spartans slowly chipped away at this lead to tie it up at 16. Mercer retaliated taking a 20-17 lead with big kills by Wagers and Karle. A kill by Jaida Howell would let the Bears take the set 25-20.Â
Set Three | Mercer would take an early 8-0 lead. The Bears would continue to dominate with big plays from McCarles and Wagers and lead 16-8 by the first timeout. UNCG would be unable to catch up and Mercer would take the set 25-16.
Set Four | The teams continued to battle keeping one point difference most of the set. Wagers continued to stack up kills and helped the Bears hold the lead(17-16) at the first timeout. The teams continued to tie at 18 and 20with the Bears taking the lead thanks to a big kill from Howell. UNCG would tie it up again at 23 and take the lead. Big kills from Wagers would keep the Bears in the running, but errors from the Bears would let UNCG take the set 26-24.
Set Five | Mercer built momentum immediately with a 4-0 scoring run. Errors from the Bears would lessen their lead and UNCG would tie it up at five. Big kills from Wagers and Karle would keep the Bears close (7-10) at the second timeout. It would not be enough and UNCG would take the final set 15-12.Â
UP NEXT
Mercer will continue the conference as they travel to Tennessee to face ETSU (Oct. 28) and the University of Chattanooga (Oct. 29) for the second time this season.
