Bears outshot Samford 13-6 in second half
BIRMINGHAM, Ala, - A goal from Samford in the seventh minute held as the only goal in the game as Samford defeated Mercer 1-0 in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals on a rainy Sunday afternoon, from the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mercer outshot Samford 13-6 in the second half and had numerous chances to find an equalizer, but couldn't find the back of the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the seventh minute Samford took a quick throw in. A Bulldog player took a shot that went off the cross bar and the rebound landed right in front of a Samford player who took a touch to control the ball and shot it in the bottom left corner to put Samford up 1-0.
Samford kept up the pressure after its goal, but Jamie Hlebec made a couple of key tackles on Samford players before they could get a cross or shot off.
In the 42nd minute, Lindsay Bell made a big save on a Samford header off a cross to keep the deficit at one at halftime.
In the second half Mercer kept the pressure on Samford and produced its best chances of the game throughout the second half. In the 51st minute Nicole Icen drew a foul and on the ensuing free kick her header sailed over the crossbar.
The Bears had their best chance to tie the game in the 65th minute, when Aliah Kitchens had the ball down the right side and cut inside beating the Samford defender and took a left-footed shot from the 6-yard box to the near-post that was saved from the diving Samford keeper.
Then, in the 78th minute Nicole Icen's header off a corner was heading toward the far post but a Samford defender was standing there to clear the ball off the line.
