Mercer has won the last 14 regular season home openers, with the most recent loss happening in November 2007 against Alabama. Friday will be the third-ever meeting with Milligan. Mercer currently leads the series 2-0.
Â
The Bears began the season on the road against East Carolina on Tuesday, November 8 with a close game, falling 77-75 in the final minutes. Three players scored in double figures, and the team shot 43% from three-point range.
Mercer will look to continue the positive shooting against Milligan as the team has done previously in this matchup. In the previous two meetings with Milligan, the Bears scored a combined 192 points. 81 of those points were scored by players on the 2022-23 roster. The last time Mercer won by at least 50 points was in the first meeting with Milligan on December 28, 2019.
Senior Kamar Robertson was among those on the scoresheet in the 104-52 win over the Buffaloes in 2019. It was just the second double-digit game of his career as a freshman for the Bears.
During the offseason, Mercer welcomed multiple transfers to the squad including Jalyn McCreary (USF), Luis Hurtado Jr. (Bryant), and Jalen Cobb (Fordham) who all made their Mercer debuts on Tuesday against ECU. McCreary had a stellar outing, logging three new career-highs with 18 points, 8 FGM, and 26 minutes played.
The experienced players were not the only ones making an impact against ECU as three freshmen made their collegiate debuts. David Craig started for the Bears, and Jah Quinones and Michael Zanoni appeared off the bench.
SCOUTING MILLIGAN
Milligan is led by head coach Bill Robinson in his 14th season with the program. The Buffaloes were picked to finish 10th in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Already three games into the season, Milligan dropped its season opener against Cumberlands, 84-69. The team began conference play with a loss to Reinhardt, 72-66, but claimed a win in its home opener against CIU, 86-82. The Buffaloes are currently 0-2 on the road.
The roster holds a great deal of experience with five players who started double-digit games last season and seven players who averaged over 16 minutes per game in 2021-22. The Buffaloes faced extensive injury woes last year and will look for the roster to remain healthy.
