Tipoff: Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball program will travel to face Georgia State on Tuesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. at the new GSU Convocation Center. This will be the 72nd meeting between the two teams. Georgia State narrowly leads the all-time series, 37-34.
Both teams have dominated this matchup at home, but the games are traditionally close. Mercer won the most recent meeting with Georgia State, 83-77, in Macon on December 4, 2021.
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers have a new look this season with first-year head coach Jonas Hayes. Hayes joined the Panthers after stepping in as interim head coach for Xavier during the Musketeers' 2022 NIT Championship run.
Georgia State had an excellent 2021-22 campaign, winning the Sun Belt Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament where the Panthers fell to Gonzaga in the first round. The team is rebuilding this year after losing its top six scorers.
The season began with an exhibition win over Morehouse, 68-57. To open the regular season, Georgia State earned a win over Coastal Georgia, 76-59, as the first official game in the new GSU Convocation Center. The Panthers continued the home stretch with a close loss to Georgia Tech, 59-57.
RECENT ACTION
Mercer earned its first win of the regular season with a thundering victory over Milligan, 118-64. It was the first time the Bears scored at least 100 points since February 19, 2020 against Samford and the first win by at least 50 points since December 28, 2019 against Milligan.
Five players scored in double figures, led by Shawn Walker Jr. with 23 points. The senior made five from three-point range which was a career-high. Numerous other Bears set career-highs including Jalyn McCreary who bested his records in points (22) and FGM (11) for the second time in a week. He also tied his career-high for rebounds with nine, but freshman TJ Grant led the team with 12 rebounds.
