ATLANTA – The Mercer men's basketball program played an incredibly tight game against Georgia State on Tuesday, November 15 at the GSU Convocation Center, falling in overtime, 85-83. It was the first time since 1996 a matchup against the Panthers went to overtime.
"We've always had good games with these guys," head coach Greg Gary said. "We knew it was going to be close. We need to learn how to close games out."
Neither team took control in the first half. There were 16 lead changes, and the largest lead by either team was five points. Luis Hurtado Jr., who led the team in scoring with 24 points, reached double figures in the first half.
Georgia State led 43-40 at halftime.
The second half featured large momentum swings for both teams. The Panthers held control for the beginning of the second half, but the score differential remained in single-digits the entire game. Mercer slowly cut down the Panthers' lead, culminating in a 9-0 run for the Bears to go ahead by eight.
Georgia State responded with an 8-0 run to even the score at 71-71 with 2:59 left in the second half. The Bears held the lead for the last two and a half minutes until Dwon Odom hit a tying shot as time expired to send the game to overtime, tied 77-77.
Overtime was a low-scoring affair with only 14 points scored between the two teams. Georgia State scored first in overtime and extended the lead to four before Mercer responded. The game was decided by free throws in the end. Odom was a perfect 4-4 from the line in overtime. A couple missed free throws by the Bears left Mercer just short as the game ended 85-83.
"It's a mentality of learning how to win on the road, and you do that by not turning the ball over, hitting your free throws, and being really nasty defensively in the last four minutes of the game," Gary added.
In addition to Hurtado Jr., three other players recorded double figures in scoring. Freshman Jah Quinones set a career-high with 14 points while Jalyn McCreary notched his third straight game in double figures with 10. Kamar Robertson rounded out the Bears in double figures with 11 points.
Mercer out-rebounded Georgia State 39-33, and Hurtado Jr. led the team with seven. 39 rebounds are only one shy of the team's season high set against Milligan on Friday.
UP NEXT: The Bears return home to Hawkins Arena to face Winthrop on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
