"Representing The Bahamas is something I never take for granted," said Mackey. "As a Bahamian, it is a tremendous honor to serve as an assistant coach and contribute to the growth of our national program while representing our country with pride."
Mackey is a native of The Bahamas and a former player of The Bahamas men's national team. He has previously coached for The Bahamas in 2024 at the Olypmic Qualifying Tournament and in 2025 at the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers and FIBA AmeriCup. Mackey joined Mercer this summer following a two-season stint with the University of South Carolina (USC) Upstate, where he served in the same role as an assistant coach. While at USC Upstate, Mackey was an integral part of the training and skills development with players like Carmelo Adkins who ended up on the Big South All-Freshman Team, Big South Honorable Mention Karmani Gregory, and Big South Freshman of the Year Mister Dean.
Mackey joined the Spartans after helping UT Martin in 2023-24 to its first Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Championship in his lone season in West Tennessee, helping the Skyhawks to a program-record 14 conference victories and 21 victories overall. Charged with heading up UT Martin's player development, he mentored three All-OVC players as guard Jordan Sears (First Team) and forwards Jacob Crews (First Team & All-Newcomer) and Issa Muhammad (Second Team) brought home honors.
The Bahamas will begin its final window in July in the first round of competition for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers. The team needs two victories to confirm qualification for the second round.
The opening game will take place on July 3 against Jamaica before taking on Puerto Rico on July 6. Both games will be played at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The Bahamas is tied with Puerto Rico with a 1-3 record and five points. Canada has already secured one of three available qualifying spots for round two, leading Group B with an undefeated 4-0 record and eight points. Jamaica remains in second position with a 2-2 record and six points.
Only the top three teams in the group will advance to round two of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers.
