Bears Return Home Against Winthrop

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball program (1-2) hosts Winthrop (2-2) on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m. at Hawkins Arena. This will be the fourth-ever meeting between the two teams and the first in Macon since November 1997.

Winthrop won the most recent matchup with the Bears in 2021 in overtime. Shawn Walker Jr. played 41 minutes in that game alongside Kamar Robertson who logged 30 minutes.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles posted a successful 2021-22 campaign, reaching the Big South Championship. Winthrop was picked to finish second in the conference this year under second-year head coach Mark Prosser.

Junior Kelton Telford has recorded excellent numbers for the Eagles this season, averaging just shy of a double-double through the first four games with 17.8 PPG and 9.5 RPG. He scored in double figures in all four games, including 18 points against Penn State and 16 points against Auburn.

Winthrop currently holds a 2-2 record with losses to Penn State and Auburn and victories over Piedmont and MTSU.

RECENT ACTION
The Bears dropped a close game on the road at Georgia State on Tuesday, falling 85-83 in overtime. Mercer managed the largest lead of the game for either team with six minutes left in the second half, but the momentum shifted in Georgia State's favor to close the gap and send it to overtime with a game-tying shot as time expired.

In overtime, free throws were the deciding factor. Georgia State was perfect from the line, while Mercer could not sink all of its opportunities.

Luis Hurtado Jr. scored a career-high 24 points while also setting career highs in FGM and minutes played. Freshman Jah Quinones scored in double figures for the first time in his career and led the team in assists and steals.
