Craig, Hurtado Jr. Double-Doubles Lead Bears Past Winthrop
11/19/2022 6:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
First career double-double for both players
MACON, Ga. – A pair of double-doubles by David Craig and Luis Hurtado Jr. highlighted the win over Winthrop, 77-68, for the Mercer men's basketball team on Saturday, November 19 at Hawkins Arena. It was the first career double-double for both players and the first time since December 28, 2019 that two players recorded double-doubles for the Bears.
Hurtado Jr., the graduate transfer from Bryant, continues to shine for the Bears. He became the first Mercer player to record 10 assists since Djordje Dimitrijevic against Samford on February 19, 2020. His 10 assists tied a career high, and Hurtado Jr. also recorded a season-high eight rebounds.
Craig reached career-highs in both points (15) and rebounds (10) to notch his first double-double. Fellow freshman Jah Quinones scored 13 points against the Eagles to log back-to-back games in double figures. The Bears had five players in double figures for the second time this season.
"The freshmen are fitting in great," head coach Greg Gary said. "They're figuring out what they need to do to be successful and get more minutes. They're good players, and they're going to have a great career here."
Senior Kamar Robertson finished five points shy of his career-high with 23 against Winthrop. He scored five from three-point range, tying his career-high and joining Shawn Walker Jr. as the only two players to reach that mark this season for Mercer.
"He [Robertson] was locked in today, he was making shots," Gary added. "He responded well from Georgia State, and that's great to see."
Despite the stellar numbers in the end, the game got off to a slow start. Only seven points were scored by the two teams combined in the first four-and-a-half minutes. Once Mercer took the lead 8-7 in the sixth minute, the Bears never looked back.
The lead extended as far as 14 in the final minutes of the first half, and Mercer led 40-31 at the break. Winthrop cut into its deficit in the second half, bringing the difference to one point, but the Bears did not relinquish the lead. The game finished 77-68 in favor of Mercer.
"The last two games we lost, at East Carolina and Georgia State, we squandered some leads," Gary explained. "Closing it out today the way we did is a good sign. The more you're in those experiences, the better you can give yourself experience to be able to know how to win those games."
Mercer's win ties the all-time series with Winthrop, 2-2. It maintains the Bears' perfect record at home this season as the team begins a four-game stretch on the road.
UP NEXT: Mercer men's basketball heads south to Tallahassee, Florida to face 0-4 Florida State on Monday, November 21 at 6:30 p.m.
