11/26/2022 12:27:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The Bears trailed for only 13 seconds
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball team earned its first win away from home against Robert Morris, 72-66, in the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic in Savannah, Georgia on Friday, November 25. The Bears led for over 39 minutes in a gritty win.
"It's a positive that we learned how to close out a game," head coach Greg Gary said. "We just have to keep improving and paying attention to details, carrying out our assignments."
Kamar Robertson led the team with 17 points, going 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. This was Robertson's fifth game in double figures, and he recorded a season-high seven rebounds.
Finishing with a .900 free throw percentage, Luis Hurtado Jr. drained a career-high nine free throws on 10 attempted. Six of these came in the final minute as Robert Morris searched for a path back into the game. This landed him at 13 points along with four assists and four rebounds.
"That's how you win these close games: you hit your free throws and get some stops," Gary explained. "He [Hurtado Jr.] did a great job in hitting his free throws."
Michael Zanoni and Jalyn McCreary both finished with 14 points against the Colonials. Zanoni recorded a career-high three steals, tied his career-best with five rebounds, and notched his third game this season scoring in double figures.
Despite logging a season-low 13 assists, the Bears recorded more assists than Robert Morris and out-rebounded the Colonials, 39-32.
Mercer dominated the game as Robert Morris led for only 13 seconds. The Bears' largest lead was 17 points during a 10-minute period where Mercer led by double figures. The Colonials shot poorly from beyond the arc, only scoring one three-point shot out of 17 attempts while the Bears finished 5-for-10.
UP NEXT: The Hostilo Hoops Community Classic continues on Saturday as Mercer faces Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia.
