Craig Leads Bears to Thrilling Win Over Fairfield

Third double-double of the season for the freshman
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman David Craig recorded his third double-double of the season, leading the Mercer men's basketball team to victory over Fairfield, 60-58, on Saturday evening at the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic in Savannah, Georgia.
Mercer scored the first points of the game and took the lead for the first four minutes, but Fairfield quickly took control. The Stags led without interruption through the first seven minutes of the second half. The Bears battled back to take alternating leads and keep the game within reach.
Fairfield went on another run, extending the lead to seven points with about five minutes remaining in the game. Mercer responded with an 11-point run to take the lead. Shawn Walker Jr. and Jalyn McCreary scored all 11 of those points to bring the Bears back on top.
The Bears stood strong against final efforts from the Stags, and a free throw by Craig sealed the win for Mercer, 60-58.
Craig had another career-day, earning 18 points and 11 rebounds. The freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, is one of three players in the Southern Conference with three double-doubles this season. His 18 points were a career-best. The team notched 36 points in the paint, thanks in part to Craig's solid performance.
"He just keeps getting better," head coach Gary said about Craig. "Yesterday was a hard game for him, and it seemed like he didn't have that zip. Today, he really did a great job. He's a load down there and can really catch and score the ball."
Walker Jr. logged his fifth game scoring in double figures this season with 16 points, finishing 7-for-10 from the field.
"I was really excited about Shawn," Gary explained. "Tonight, towards the end, he made some big shots for us and drives since he's capable of that. That's what we need him to do."
10 players recorded minutes against the Stags, including freshman TJ Grant who gathered five rebounds in 10 minutes. Senior Harrison Drake made his second appearance of the season and provided much-needed stability on defense.
The Bears displayed continued success from the free throw line, shooting above 80% for the second straight game. Kamar Robertson, Luis Hurtado Jr., McCreary, and Walker Jr. each finished 2-2 from the line.
"Jalyn McCreary didn't play much, but he comes in and gets us some buckets and hits his free throws" Gary added." It's great to see that confidence to be able to do that late."
