Last season, the Bears (23-7, 13-1 SoCon) continued their championship ways by claiming their fourth Southern Conference Tournament title in the last five years, advancing to the NCAA Tournament to face top-seeded UConn in Storrs, Connecticut. Additionally, it was Mercer's sixth SoCon crown in the last seven years. The Orange and Black defeated Furman 73-54 in the SoCon Championship to earn a trip to the Big Dance.. Senior Amoria Neal-Tysor excelled offensively in the tournament and scored 26 points in the championship game.Â
Mercer returns several key players this season, including three of its top four scorers from last season. One of those players is SoCon preseaon Player of the Year, Amoria Neal-Tysor. Amoria was a First Team All-Conference player who led the Bears with 16.5 points per game last season. SoCon Freshman of the Year, Erin Houpt, is back after shooting better than 40% from three-point range. Jaron Dougherty returns after earning Second Team All-Conference honors last season. She finished third on the team in points per game (10.7) and second in rebounds per game (6.4).
SCOUTING MTSU
Middle Tennessee went 27-8 in its 2021-22 campaign, including a 14-4 record in conference play. The Lady Raiders return four starters and nine lettermen from last season's 27-win team that reached the semifinals of the WNIT. The 27 wins were fourth most in program history.
The Lady Raider were named the Conference USA preseason favorite and three Lady Raiders were named to the C-USA preseason team.
Transfer Savannah Wheeler, was named to her third straight C-USA preseason team, comes to MTSU as one of the most coveted transfers in the country after winning the C-USA scoring title a season ago at Marshall. The guard out of Catlettsburg, Ky., averaged 20.2 points per game in 2021-22.
