Bears Shoot For Repeat Against UNCG
Johnson City, Tenn., —The Mercer Bears will play for their second straight Southern Conference Tournament championship, after a 1-0 victory over East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee Nov. 6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears entered the game as the number three seed and ETSU was the number two seed. The homestanding Buccaneers came out strong, after the Bears had topped them 3-2 in the regular season finale on October 29. Tight defense by backliners Chad Eldridge, Woodi Pondeca, Sekou Agard, and close marking by the Bears midfield contingent kept ETSU at bay.
With 17 minutes gone, Â off a free kick from near the left sideline and beyond the top of the 18 yard box, Dylan Gaither showed why he was worthy of First Team All-Conference honors. He placed a beautiful kick beyond the reach of goalkeeper Cole Hunter, and the ball bounced just inside the six-yard box, and up and under the crossbar, just over the goal line.
The Bears were able to make the goal stand up. Goalkeeper Trevor McMullen was credited with four saves, and additionally intercepted several dangerous crossing attempts to thwart ETSU scoring opportunities.
