
Mercer's Offense Outlasts the Owls

Rhatigan tallies seven goals in road win
KENNESAW, Ga. – In the road opener, Mercer (2-1) outscored instate foe, Kennesaw State (2-2), by an 18-14 margin at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Fresh off being tabbed as the Big South's Offensive Player of the Week, Hailey Rhatigan scored seven goals on 14 shots. In the pair of games last week, the senior midfielder totaled seven. Chloe Schaeffer netted four goals and helped on the game's first score - notched by Erin Degan, just 1:09 into the game.
Degnan and Shannon Urey each added a hat trick to the cause, while Degnan recorded an assist.
The two sides alternated the first five goals, with KSU having the upper hand early. Degnan leveled the affair and Rhatigan followed with five unanswered of her own to stretch the lead to 8-3. Schaeffer and Urey also scored before the break to take an 11-7 lead into the intermission.
In the third, both sides scored three times - including a pair from Schaeffer and one from Urey for the Bears – to hold the four-goal advantage into the final stanza.
An eight-minute stretch between the end of the third and beginning portion of the fourth, Kennesaw State trimmed a six-goal deficit to just four to try to swing the momentum. Goals from Abby Soltys, Schaeffer and Rhatigan put the game out of reach with 5:44 to play.
Mercer fired 40 shots, with 24 of them being on frame on the afternoon and forced the Owls into 21 turnovers. Abby Soltys led the Bears with six draw controls won, Degnan claimed five, Kileigh Casey had four and Rhatigan with one.
Isea Cryne stopped four shots in over 55 minutes in the cage, while Kate Vanderlinde clocked nearly four and a half minutes in relief.
This upcoming Sunday, March 6, UMass Lowell will visit Five Star Stadium to face Mercer. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
