Runs Lead to Win Over River Hawks

Bears take 16-11 decision over UMass Lowell
MACON, Ga. – Returning home for the first time in two weeks, Mercer used 11-first half goals to separate themselves from visiting UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon. Chloe Schaeffer led the Bears (3-1) with six goals (a personal high) on 13 shots and an assist to lead the attack. Hailey Rhatigan added four, while Shannon Urey, Hannah Lind, Lyndsey Lewis and Kileigh Casey each notched one.
The game's first six goals were evenly split before five straight by Mercer passed UMass Lowell (1-5) goalkeepers for an 8-3 advantage just three minutes into the second quarter. In that five-goal run, Mercer saw four scores by Urey, as well as Schaeffer, Lewis and Rhatigan.
When UMass Lowell answered with their fourth goal of the contest, Schaeffer and Rhatigan combined for three more for a seven-goal advantage. Mercer went into the break with an 11-5 advantage after the River Hawks tacked on a score with just under five in the second.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the third with a goal at the 12:12 mark to cut their deficit back down to six. In a quick stretch, Schaeffer buried a pair to bring the lead back to seven. Mercer's final three scores in the fourth were tacked on by Lind, Casey and Rhatigan.
Next up, Mercer will travel to second-ranked North Carolina on Friday, March 11. Opening draw with the Tar Heels is set for 5 p.m.
